forti facts about plants
- Certainly you have seen a lot of tall trees in our hotels and surrounding areas, but they are nothing compared to the highest tree in history, an Australian eucalyptus that reached a height of 132 metres in 1872.
- Plants are an example of survival. If they don’t get enough water, their roots are capable of looking for water. The roots, for example, of the Garrofer tree can grow up to 15 metres long.
- Cacti are well adapted to places where there is not a lot of rain. They store as much water as they can in reserve in their trunk, they can store as much as 1000 litres. They have spines instead of leaves to avoid evaporation of water.
- In the jungles, trees reach a great height and grow very close to each other, meaning that very little light gets to the ground. Because of this, climbing plants that grow on the ground climb up the tree trunks in search of light, until they reach the highest point. This movement towards the light is called phototropism.
- Be careful with this one: Yew trees are one of the longest living trees in the world. They contain a poison that can kill a horse in five minutes.
- Carnivorous plants normally grow in swampy areas and places with poor soil and scare mineral nutrients. Nature has forced these species to adapt to their environment, so they get most of their nutrients from insects instead of from the soil.
