- It seems that the Earth doesn`t move, but it rotates at a speed of 1000 mph, and moves through spaces at the incredible speed of 70,000 miles per hour. To make a comparison, Fernando Alonso normally reaches 186 mph in his Formula 1 car.
- There is a tremendous noise when a volcano eruption happens. The loudest noise registered was in 1883 in the Krakatoa volcano. The noise was heard around 3000 miles away.
- Take care with lightening!: 1000 people die every year as a result of lightening strikes. Every day, almost 2000 bolts of lightening strike the Earth, caused by electrical storms. Bolts of lightening can also measure up to 30 miles in length and reach a temperature greater than the surface of the sun, but they are only 2.5 centimetres thick.
- Certainly you remember that the Titanic sank when it crashed into an iceberg. Icebergs are large chunks of ice that detach from glaciers. The strange thing is that only 10% of its body can be seen from the surface. This means that if they are immense, they are much bigger still under the water.
- Have you ever seen hail? Of course you have. You probably saw that the hailstones are not normally bigger than peas. Well, the largest hailstone fell in Bangladesh in 1986 and weighed 1 kg. Get under cover!
- About good manners: did you know that astronauts can’t burp because the lack of gravity doesn’t allow the gas to be separated from the liquid in their stomachs.
