Forti, the Little Girl Once upon a time there was a little girl, Forti, who had started going to school. She was very small and the school was very big. When she discovered that she could get into her classroom through the door that led outside, she was happy because the school didn’t seem so big. One morning the teacher said:
- We are going to make a drawing today.
- Great!- thought Forti-.
She loved drawing and she could do anything: cows, trains, chickens, tigers, lions, boats. So she got her pencil box out and started to draw, but the teacher said:
- Wait, it still isn’t time to start! I still haven’t said what we are going to draw. Today, we are going to draw flowers.
- Fine! - though Forti.
She loved doing flowers and she started to draw very beautiful ones with her violet, orange and blue pencils. But the teacher said:
- I will show you how, just wait a moment! - and, picking up a piece of chalk, she drew a red flower with a green stalk. Now -she said- you may start.
Forti looked at the flower that the teacher had drawn, and compared it with the ones that she had done. She liked her ones better, but she didn’t say anything. She turned the sheet over and drew a red flower with a green stalk, just like the teacher told her to.
Another day, the teacher said:
- Today we are going to make something out of Plasticine.
- Fine! - though Forti.
She liked Plasticine and could make a lot of things with it: snakes, snowmen, mice, cars, trucks; and she started to stretch and knead her ball of Plasticine. But the teacher said:
- Wait, it still isn’t time to start! Now –she said- we are going to make a plate.
- Great!- thought Forti-.
She loved modelling plates and she started to make them in all shapes and sizes. But the teacher said:
- Wait, I will show you how! - and she showed them how to make a bowl-. Now you can start.
Forti looked at the plate that the teacher had modelled, and then at those that she had made. She liked her ones better, but she didn’t say anything. She just remodelled the Plasticine and made a bowl, just like the teacher had shown her.
Very soon, Forti learnt to wait to be told what to do, and how to do it, and to do things just the same as the teacher. She didn’t do anything by herself again.
Time went by and Forti and her family moved to another town, where the little Forti had to go to another school. This school was bigger and there were no outside doors in her classroom. On the first day of classes, the teacher said:
- We are going to paint a picture today.
- Great! – thought Forti, and she waited for the teacher to tell her what she had to do; but she didn’t say anything. She just walked around the classroom, looking at what the children were doing. When she got to Forti, she said to her:
- Don’t you want to do a drawing?
- Yes – answered little Forti -, but what do I have to do?
- You can do whatever you want – said the teacher.
- With any colour?
- With nay colour – answered the teacher-. If everyone did the same drawing and used the same colours, how would I know who had done what?
Forti didn’t answer her and out her head down and drew a red flower with a green stalk”.
